Acumer 5000

Acumer 5000 is a proprietary water treatment polymer developed by Dow Chemical (now under DuPont’s water treatment portfolio). It is commonly used in cooling tower systems for scale control and dispersancy.
  1. What is Acumer 5000?
    1. Type: Polyacrylate-based multifunctional copolymer
    2. Function: Dispersant and antiscalant
    3. Primary Purpose: Controls scale formation (especially calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, and magnesium silicate) and disperses suspended solids and iron oxides
  1. Use in Cooling Towers
    1. In cooling water systems, Acumer 5000 is used to:
    1. Prevent scaling by interfering with crystal growth (threshold inhibition and crystal distortion)
    2. Disperse particulates like silt, iron, and biomass
    3. Enhance system cleanliness, improving heat transfer and equipment life
  1. It is typically blended with other scale/corrosion inhibitors in formulated cooling water treatment products.
  1. Maximum Silica It Can Treat
    1. While Acumer 5000 is not specifically designed as a silica stabilizer, it does enhance silica dispersancy, especially in the presence of magnesium silicate scale.
    1. Silica Tolerance: Up to 150 ppm of soluble silica (as SiO₂) has been reported in practical systems, depending on other system conditions (pH, magnesium concentration, temperature, etc.).
    2. It helps disperse colloidal silica and inhibit magnesium silicate fouling, which becomes problematic at higher cycles or high silica waters.
  1. Dosage Range
    1. Typical dosage range (active polymer) for cooling towers:
    1. 5 to 30 ppm depending on:
  1. Water chemistry (alkalinity, hardness, silica)
  2. Desired cycles of concentration
  • System temperature and flow
  1. Presence of other inhibitors
  1. Higher dosage (20–30 ppm) may be used in systems prone to heavy scaling or with poor-quality makeup water.
  2. Synergies with PBTC (2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid)
    1. There are strong synergies:
    1. PBTC is an excellent threshold inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor, especially for iron and steel.
    2. Acumer 5000 works well with PBTC to provide:
  1. Complementary scale inhibition: Acumer handles dispersancy and particulate scale, PBTC is effective against calcium phosphate and provides corrosion inhibition.
  2. Enhanced thermal stability compared to older phosphonates like HEDP.
  • Lower phosphate loading—important for discharge compliance.
  1. They are often combined in low- or no-zinc formulations to control scale and corrosion in open recirculating cooling systems.
